What to Wear on a Tanzania Safari

Pack adaptable layers, comfortable footwear and practical sun protection rather than a specialist safari wardrobe.
Wear lightweight, comfortable layers on a Tanzania safari, with a warmer outer layer for early starts and covered shoes for uneven ground. You do not need a matching safari outfit. Clothing that handles dust, sunshine and changing temperatures matters more than expensive expedition branding.
Build your wardrobe around layers
Game drives can begin in cool air and continue into a hot afternoon. A breathable shirt over a T-shirt gives you options without requiring a complete change. Add a fleece or light insulated jacket when visiting cooler highland areas. Lightweight trousers are useful for sun coverage and evenings, while a compact waterproof layer helps when showers interrupt the day.
TANAPA recommends neutral-coloured clothing for safari travel. Muted green, beige and brown are practical choices, but comfort and fabric weight deserve equal attention. Choose garments you can sit in for several hours, and avoid packing anything so delicate that dust or repeated washing becomes a problem.
Match footwear and accessories to activities
Comfortable trainers or lightweight walking shoes usually suit vehicle-based itineraries and lodge paths. A walking safari may require sturdier footwear, so ask about the actual terrain before buying boots. Sandals can be useful at your accommodation but should not be your only shoes. A secure hat and sunglasses are useful in open vehicles.
- Pack breathable shirts, lightweight trousers and enough underwear for the laundry schedule.
- Bring one warm layer and a compact rain jacket.
- Choose already-tested closed shoes and comfortable socks.
- Keep a hat, sunglasses and sun protection accessible during drives.
- Confirm luggage limits if your itinerary includes small-aircraft flights.
Pack for the whole journey
Safari clothing may not cover every setting on your trip. Include an outfit suitable for town visits, restaurants or onward coastal travel. Ask each accommodation about laundry rather than assuming daily service. A smaller collection of versatile clothes is generally easier to manage than separate outfits for every drive.
