WORLD COMPASS ADVENTURES
Shira Plateau
The Shira Plateau is a notable feature on Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. Located in Tanzania, Kilimanjaro attracts adventurers and mountaineers from around the world.
The Shira Plateau is a vast high-altitude plain situated on the western slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. It stretches over an area of approximately 30 square kilometers and lies at an elevation of around 3,800 meters (12,500 feet). The plateau offers trekkers a unique and picturesque experience during their climb.
Ascending via the Shira Route, which starts on the Shira Plateau, provides climbers with a scenic and diverse journey. The plateau showcases a range of landscapes, including moorland, heath, and volcanic rock formations. The vegetation on the plateau is also quite varied, adding to its beauty.
The Shira Plateau is known for its panoramic views and stunning scenery. As climbers traverse the plateau, they can witness the vast expanse of the plateau itself and enjoy breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscape. On clear days, neighbouring peaks such as Mount Meru and other sections of Mount Kilimanjaro can be seen, adding to the sense of awe and grandeur.
It’s important to note that the Shira Plateau is not the final destination for climbers aiming to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. The ultimate goal for most climbers is to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point on the mountain, located at an elevation of 5,895 meters (19,341 feet).
If you are planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and traverse the Shira Plateau, it is recommended to seek guidance from experienced guides or tour operators. They can provide you with detailed information, assist in trip planning, and ensure your safety throughout the climb.
