Mawenzi Plateau
The Mawenzi Plateau is a distinctive feature on Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa located in Tanzania.
Mawenzi is one of the three volcanic cones of Mount Kilimanjaro, along with Kibo and Shira. It is the second-highest peak on the mountain, standing at an elevation of approximately 5,149 meters (16,893 feet). The Mawenzi cone is known for its rugged and dramatic landscape, characterized by sharp peaks, steep cliffs, and rocky formations.
The Mawenzi Plateau is a relatively flat and expansive area situated on the southeastern side of the Mawenzi cone. It offers trekkers and climbers a unique and captivating experience during their ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro.
The plateau is surrounded by stunning scenery, including breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks, glaciers, and valleys. It provides a picturesque setting for climbers to rest, acclimatize, and enjoy the natural beauty of the mountain.
While the Mawenzi Plateau is not the primary route to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, some climbers may choose to explore this area during certain climbing routes, such as the Rongai Route. The Mawenzi Tarn, a picturesque alpine lake, is also located on the Mawenzi Plateau and serves as a popular camping spot for climbers.
It’s worth noting that due to the challenging terrain and technical difficulties associated with the Mawenzi cone, climbing to the summit of Mawenzi is not a common objective for most climbers. The primary goal for climbers is usually to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro, located on the Kibo cone.
If you are considering climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and have an interest in exploring the Mawenzi Plateau, it is essential to consult with experienced guides or tour operators. They can provide you with detailed information, advise on suitable routes, and ensure your safety and enjoyment during the climb.
