THE JOURNEY

Overview

Marangu ascends Kilimanjaro through rainforest and moorland before reaching the high saddle below Kibo. Unlike a camping itinerary, this route uses the Mandara, Horombo and Kibo huts. The summit approach climbs from Kibo Hut to the crater rim and continues toward Uhuru Peak. The descent returns through Horombo and Mandara to Marangu Gate.

Day 1

Arrive in Tanzania

Transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport to the hotel in Moshi. Meet the guide for a trek briefing and an equipment check.

Day 2

Marangu Gate (1860m) to Mandara Hut (2700m)

Trek from Marangu Gate (1860m) to Mandara Hut (2700m). After the forest descent and park formalities, return by vehicle to the hotel in Moshi. Approximate distance and time: Elevation Gain:1,050 meters, 3,445 feet; Hiking time: 4 to 6 hours.

Day 3

Mandara Hut (2700m) to Horombo Hut (3700m)

Day 4

Horombo Hut (3700m) to Kibo Hut (4700m)

Trek from Horombo Hut (3700m) to Kibo Hut (4700m). Cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, then rest before the overnight summit ascent. Approximate distance and time: Distance covered: 9.5km; Approx. time taken: 7 hours.

Day 5

Kibo Hut (4700m) to UHURU PEAK (5895m) & down to Horombo Hut (3700m)

Trek from Kibo Hut (4700m) to UHURU PEAK (5895m) & down to Horombo Hut (3700m). The ascent passes the crater rim at Gillman’s Point before continuing toward Uhuru Peak and descending. Approximate distance and time: Distance covered: 22km; Approx. time taken: 12 – 15 hours.

Day 6

Horombo Hut (3700m) to Marangu Gate (1860m)

Depart Tanzania

Spend the remaining time in Moshi before departure. If flight times allow, there is time to explore town.
