Plan a first safari by setting priorities, choosing a manageable route and checking the details behind each quotation.

Plan your first Tanzania safari by deciding what you want from the experience before choosing parks or accommodation. Your available time, spending limit and tolerance for long transfers should shape the route. A coherent itinerary with time to observe wildlife is generally a better starting point than a checklist of famous destinations.

Write a useful travel brief

Describe your interests in practical terms: photography, birds, varied landscapes or an introduction to wildlife viewing. Include who is travelling, any accessibility requirements and whether you prefer private arrangements or a shared departure. Explain what comfortable accommodation means to you rather than relying on labels such as luxury.

Choose a date window rather than assuming all months offer the same conditions. Tanzania National Parks identifies June to October as dry, November to December as the short rains and March to May as the long rains. Ask how those patterns affect your proposed route.

Compare complete plans, not headline prices

Request a day-by-day itinerary showing accommodation, transfers and planned activities. Establish whether the arrival and departure days contain meaningful safari time or mainly travel. Confirm whether your vehicle is exclusive to your party and how shared arrangements affect departure times and daily decisions.

Compare inclusions carefully. Park charges, meals, internal flights, airport transfers and optional activities should be clearly identified. Written cancellation and amendment terms matter as much as attractive photographs, particularly when several suppliers are involved.

Finish with a booking checklist

  • Check passport and visa requirements through Tanzania Immigration.
  • Confirm the exact airports and accommodation locations.
  • Read payment, cancellation and substitution terms.
  • Arrange insurance suitable for the activities you intend to undertake.
  • Obtain baggage rules for every flight in the itinerary.

The official visa guidance requires applicants to have a passport valid for at least six months and an unused visa page. Requirements depend on your circumstances, so consult the full guidance rather than assuming another traveller's experience applies. Make your final booking only when the route, responsibilities and total scope are clear.
