Safari Itinerary

  • Arrival in Tanzania

Starting from the northeastern side of the mountain near the Kenyan border, the Rongai Route rises above the Amboseli plains and approach the summit of Kilimanjaro west of the Mawenzi peak. It is an unfrequented route and is also the easiest camping approach to Uhuru Peak. The descent normally uses the Marangu Route. There are two variations to this route. Rongai route is best option during the rainy season, due to its location, which receive little rain. This route can be climbed for 6days, although 7days is recommend for better acclimatization

  • Day 1: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp (2,671m)

Begin your trek from the Rongai Gate, hiking through fertile farmland and pine forests. This 3-4 hour trek is gentle and allows you to acclimate gradually. Arrive at Simba Camp, located on the edge of the moorland zone, where you'll camp for the night.

  • Day 2: Simba Camp to Second Cave (3,450m)

Continue trekking through heather and moorland, enjoying views of Kibo and the eastern ice fields on the crater rim. This 5-6 hour hike leads you to Second Cave, a scenic spot where you'll set up camp and enjoy the expansive vistas.

  • Day 3: Second Cave to Kikelewa Camp (3,600m)

Trek for 6-7 hours, passing through the moorlands and into the high alpine zone. The trail becomes steeper as you approach Kikelewa Camp, set in a sheltered valley near giant Senecio plants. This camp provides stunning views and a chance to rest before the next day's climb.

  • Day 4: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m)

A shorter yet steeper climb today, taking 4-5 hours to reach Mawenzi Tarn Camp, situated in a dramatic cirque beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. This camp offers breathtaking views and a good opportunity for acclimatization, with the option for a short acclimatization hike in the afternoon.

  • Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut (4,695m)

Cross the lunar desert of the "Saddle" between Mawenzi and Kibo, a 5-6 hour trek that leads to Kibo Hut. This camp, located at the base of the Kibo crater wall, is where you'll prepare for the final ascent. Arrive early, rest, and have an early dinner before the midnight summit push.

  • Day 6: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Begin the final ascent around midnight, trekking through the darkness with headlamps to Gilman's Point on the crater rim. From there, continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, arriving around sunrise. After celebrating your achievement, descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut, making this a long and challenging 12-15 hour day.

  • Day 7: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate (1,880m)

On your final day, trek through the rainforest zone to Marangu Gate, a 5-7 hour descent. At the gate, you'll receive your summit certificates and enjoy a celebratory farewell with your trekking team before being transferred back to your hotel.
